ANXIETY, DEPRESSION
& STRESS !
Anxiety itself is fear. Very often fear of the unknown or the future. It causes the release of adrenalin in the body which is the hormone which stimulates the "Flight or fight reflex", raising blood pressure, heart and breathing rates and sends blood to the muscles for a quick reaction.
In cavemen was a very useful thing, but in our cushioned lives can be inappropriate and causes illness as the dangers are so often not of the imagined magnitude.
Anxiety is present in many guises when it is inappropriate, and when the mind takes over with worry, it causes many unpleasant side-effects, even as far as panic attacks. Panic attacks are far more prevalent than most people would believe and cover many people who visit me for help through hypnotherapy. People seem to be able to be anxious and not depressed, but nearly everyone who comes to me suffering depression is also anxious. I see it as a continuum of anxiety moving on into depression, but this is my only own theory.
Depression is very debilitating also, and some people can become totally dysfunctional and unable to communicate, which would be termed as clinical depression, though levels of depression are different for every sufferer, from just feeling down to complete despair. It can feels as if there is nothing to live for.
Unfortunately, we use the word depression far to easily these days, which detracts from it's true and sometimes quite awful effects of damage it has on people's lives. Hypnotherapy is a very useful treatment and tool to help with all stress-related problems.
Stress is something that we actually need or we wouldn't do anything! However when it gets too much for us, sometimes if we are run down, it can deteriorate into many different forms of illness.
A dictionery definition of stress covers all of the things talked about above. Sometimes we have such high expectations of ourselves, often caused through believing what other people expect of us (sometimes in the case of our parents, wanting to fulfil their own unfinished business), we pressurise ourselves beyond what we are humanly capable of, again sometimes leading to illness.
We all need to be more realistic in our expectations of life and let go of wanting stuff that we do not actually NEED. There is a big difference between needs and wants. Needs are important, wants are not that necessary.
